Thriller films are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety. The aim of the Thriller is to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The protagonist is set against a problem – often an escape, a mission, or a mystery. No matter what sub-genre a Thriller film falls into, the primary plot emphasizes the danger that the protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built upon throughout the film and leads to a highly stressful climax.
A Thriller movie differs from a Horror movie in that the Thriller is more psychological while Horror films often aim to evoke viewers’ nightmares, fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown.
