Story:  The two-hour movie event is executive produced by Howard Braunstein, Debra Martin Chase and Wendy Williams, and is based on the bestseller Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by former Time Magazine music editor Christopher John Farley. 

Before Beyoncé and before Rihanna, self-proclaimed “street but sweet” Aaliyah was poised to become a global icon with top-selling albums, a hot movie career and an adoring fan base. The film follows the beautiful and talented performer’s inspirational journey, from her debut on “Star Search” at the age of ten to the challenges she faced during her rise to become the Princess of R&B. On August 25, 2001, at the height of her popularity, her life was tragically cut short when a plane carrying the singer and some of her video crew crashed after takeoff from a Bahamian runway. Although just 22-years-old at the time of her death, Aaliyah continues to lead a legacy as Billboard’s tenth most famous R&B artist of the past 25 years and one of the recording industry’s most successful artists in history. Candy discovers that an anonymous fan she’s had for years has passed way – and he was her biological father, Freddy Nelson.

Content with the love and support of her adoptive family, Candy has never been curious about her biological parents. That all changes when she travels back for her father’s funeral, meets the Nelson family – including biological uncle Abner (GregAlan Williams), Freddy’s wife Delores (Angie Stone) and her two step-brothers – and discovers that her reclusive, angry and stubborn birth mother, Mary Jo (Lynn Whitfield) is going to be a challenge. Update:  On 7/31/14 Deadline reported that Brooklyn Sudano has booked a lead role in Lifetime’s original movie With With This Ring slated to debut this year. Written and directed by Nzingha Stewart (The Game) the romantic comedy revolves around three single best friends, who after attending the lavish wedding of their best friend on New Year’s Eve, make the vow to be married within the year. Sudano, will play Elise, the bride-to-be getting married who relies on her best friends to get her down the aisle when she gets a little case of cold feet.

Deadline also revealed (7/28/14) that Stephen Bishop (Being Mary Jane) has also been tapped for a lead role in Lifetime’s original movie With This Ring, slated to debut this year. Bishop will play Dr. Sean Braswell, a handsome, successful plastic surgeon who is a good man and father to Viviane’s (Jill Scott) 8-year-old son, Cory.

Details:  Lifetime has tapped Jill Scott, Eve and Regina Hall to star in the original movie With This Ring, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on 7/11/14. The romantic comedy centers on three single best friends who attend the lavish wedding of a fourth on New Year’s Eve, and desperation pushes them to make the vow to be married within the year. Each woman starts the year with hopes of what will happen over the next 12 months, but will they all make it to the altar?

The movie, produced by Sony Pictures Television, hails from executive producers Tracey Edmonds, Sheila Ducksworth (Soul Food) and Gabrielle Union. With This Ring will be written and directed by Nzingha Stewart (The Game) and will film in August in Cleveland for a debut later this year. It is based on Angela Burt-Murray’s novel The Vow, which Gabrielle Union optioned five years ago and sold to Sony for Lifetime. This is Union’s first project as a producer. Source: Deadline.
